Cleaning Benefits

How safe is your dryer vent?

Dryer vent cleaning improves the safety and efficiency of your dryer installation. As a dryer vent becomes filled with lint and other debris, drying time increases and can cause the dryer itself to overheat.

This increases energy consumption since the dryer has to run longer to dry your clothes and can also cause fires in the dryer or the dryer duct. The Consumer Product Safety Commission reports dryer related home fires are on the increase. CPSC figures show that yearly there are thousands of dryer fires which cause 100's of injuries, millions of dollars in property damage and numerous deaths.

If you have noticed that your dryer is running longer than it used to, then you may need to have the dryer vent cleaned. Some dryer vents are relatively short and straight and can be cleaned easily by the homeowner. Others arenít that easy, and may require the use of special tools and equipment. We have tools specifically designed for this purpose, and with these tools we are able to do a thorough job of cleaning even the most difficult installations. While dryer vents are routinely blocked with lint, animal nesting is also another frequent cause of dryer vent blockage. Our equipment allows us to remove these blockages as well.

We recommend that this type of cleaning be done every year. If you have never had your dryer vent cleaned before, then you should definitely consider having this done. In many cases, the cost of the cleaning can be recovered over the next year by your savings in hydro alone.

We proudly service the Southern California area. We will provide quality dryer vent cleaning, vent solutions and answers to any of your questions or concerns..

Your Dryer Vents are All-Important

There are many things that contribute to the proper operation of a clothes dryer. The venting is perhaps the most critical. Below we describe a dryer's functions and how its venting plays a part.

Moisture

One of the most important functions of a dryer is the elimination of moisture recovered during the heating of damp clothing. This moisture is held in the warm air produced by the dryer as humidity, and is normally expelled to the outdoors through the dryer's vent. If this air can not be adequately removed, poor drying will result.

This moisture can also condense into pools of water in the dryer vent, eventually leaking out. Any moisture accumulation inside the dryer ducting is a sign of poor venting which should be looked into. Schedule Northstar Services for a dryer vent cleaning and inspection.

Heat

The heat is another important function of a dryer. Many current dryer models have a 'one-time', non-resettable, thermal fuse or safety. These safety devices will open should the dryer's vent not be installed properly, or if it becomes restricted. Once this happens, the dryer will no longer heat and will require the part to be replaced to correct the condition. On some dryer designs (usually gas) failure of one of these thermal fuses will totally stop the dryer operation altogether.

On older models without one of these thermal safeties, poor venting can cause the dryer to cycle on its safety thermostat, instead of the temperature control thermostat. This usually contributes to poor drying and can cause overheating. On some models, the malfunctioning of the timer operation affects some cycles.

Dryer vent problems could be avoided with regular dryer vent cleaning.

Special Report on House Fires

The United States Consumer Product Safety Commission has issued a special report detailing the fire hazards related to lint in clothes dryers and dryer vents. Approximately 20,000 fires per year are attributed to excessive lint in dryers and dryer vents. Additionally, dozens of deaths and millions of dollars of property damage occur as a result of these fires.

Fires can occur when lint builds up in the dryer or in the exhaust duct. Lint can block the flow of air, cause excessive build-up and can result in a fire in dryers and where they are located.

Why We Clean Dryer Vents:

  • Protects your home & its contents from fires, smoke and pollutants
  • Significantly reduces energy operating costs
  • Dryers run more efficiently
  • Dryers will last longer
  • Clothes will dry faster

VERY IMPORTANT NOTE:

Purchasing a new dryer does not eliminate the potential fire risk inherent in dryer vents. It is the dryer vent itself, clogged with lint and paper particles, that is the primary and most significant fire hazard.

FIRE WARNING:

Even a cleaned lint screen traps only 75% of the lint produced inside a dryer. The rest of the lint builds up over time inside the dryer vent, becoming a fire hazard. Dryer lint is highly flammable and has the potential to ignite at any time.
